On October 25, a statement on academic freedom was adopted by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
CAUT has issued an open letter to the AUCC (PDF), which addresses some issues your FAUW representatives have with the AUCC statement and also reminds us of some of the instances of academic freedom being violated, in Canada, along the lines where the AUCC statement is deficient.
Mental health disorders may affect any one of us. In Canada, mental and behavioural disorders account for as much as 25 percent of reported workplace diseases and injury. The most serious impediment to sound treatment and/or accommodation is our collective lack of understanding.
This is a day dedicated to bringing us all to a common knowledge of mental illnesses, where to get help, how to help others, and what our collective responsibilities are as members of the university community.

TORONTO—The University of Waterloo’s Professor Susan M. Shaw has won a 2011 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Woman of Distinction Award.
The award, sponsored by OCUFA’s Status of Women Committee, recognizes women who have improved the lives and working conditions of academic women and, by extension, their colleagues, families, and friends.
“Professor Shaw has tirelessly advanced the cause of women in academia with respect to hiring and retention practice, inclusive workplace environments, and family-friendly policy, “ said Helene Cummins, Chair of the Status of Women Committee. “Her leadership and advocacy on behalf of academic women embodies the spirit of the Woman of Distinction Award.”
The award will be presented at an awards dinner hosted by OCUFA in Toronto, October 21, 2010. You can read more about the award at ocufa.on.ca.

Dr. Ian Hacking, a University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and award-winning philosopher, delivered this year's prestigious Hagey Lecture in the Humanities Theatre on Monday October 3, exploring the question of how humans became able to do mathematics. 200 students, faculty, staff, and community members attended the lecture, and dozens were present for the two student colloquia the following day.

Female faculty members are invited to W³: Waterloo Women’s Wednesdays, a new joint initiative from FAUW, the GSA, Staff Association, Post-Doc office, and Watport.
W³ will be meeting on the last Wednesday of each month from 4-6pm at the Grad House. Please see the W³ poster (PDF) for more details and contact information.

The FAUW Status of Women and Equity Committee hosted a public lecture by Shari Graydon entitled Informed Opinions: Causes and Consequences of the Gender Gap in Public Discourse (or The Top 7 Reasons Smart Women Should Speak Up!). Shari Graydon is an award-winning author, journalist and communications consultant with 20 years of experience on both sides of the media microphone. A former newspaper columnist, TV producer and commentator for CBC radio and TV, she also served as press secretary to a provincial premier, and as president of Media Watch. Her talk at the University of Waterloo focused on how scarce women's perspectives are in the public discourse, and what’s behind their absence.
FAUW was pleased to find over 70 people in attendance.
